W. Bro. J.S.M. Ward stands out as an exceptional Masonic scholar. His extensive reading, travel experiences, and diverse interactions have enriched his research. Notably, he founded the Masonic Study Society, which includes many respected Masonic writers. Ward’s dedication has inspired many to delve deeper into the mysteries and meanings behind Masonic rituals.

Purpose of the Entered Apprentice’s Handbook.

The first volume in Ward’s series of studies, this handbook focuses on the Entered Apprentice degree. It aims to encourage younger members not to be satisfied with just the outward beauty of Masonic ceremonies but to pursue a deeper understanding of the ritual. This journey of comprehension will help them view Masonry as a civilizing force, a benevolent institution, and a repository of ancient wisdom.

Diverse Interpretations of Masonic Ritual.

Ward acknowledges that not everyone will agree with his conclusions. Similar to sacred texts, Masonic rituals are open to various interpretations. These rituals have evolved, reflecting the balance between differing forces across ages. This continuous adjustment between material and spiritual emphases shapes the unique character of Masonry.

The Relationship Between Spirit and Matter.

Masonry delves into the relationships between spirit and matter, heaven and earth, God and man, and the soul and the body. Reconciliation between these elements is crucial. At times, emphasis is placed more on one side than the other to achieve balance. For example, symbols like the Cross and the Square, initially earthly signs, gained spiritual significance in Christianity and Masonry to underline that true piety must manifest in kind relationships.

Symbolic Representations and Their Meanings.

In Ward’s interpretation, the Junior Warden (J.W.) represents the body, while the Senior Warden (S.W.) symbolizes the soul. This suggests that divine and human aspects in Masonry are interconnected. Duties to God and neighbours are different facets of the same truth. Serving fellow humans reflects the divine lineage from the Father of All.

Enhancing the Understanding of Masonic Rituals.

Ward’s series aims to guide both novices and experienced Masons to deeply understand the ceremonies’ significance. This comprehension adds a profound inner light to the symbolic jewels and emblems of Masonry, enhancing their beauty.

Meeting a Recognized Need.

The positive reception of Ward’s books within the Craft highlights their importance as insightful expositions of Masonic rituals. While members are familiar with the external rituals, these handbooks offer a deeper appreciation and delight in their hidden meanings.
